Qualitative Research in Information Systems: Tools & Tips

Workshop Corodinators:

Prof. Janaki Srinivasan ([email protected])

Prof. P. Vigneswara Ilavarasan ([email protected])

Objective of the workshop :

In recent years, the Information Systems domain has enthusiastically embraced the use of qualitative methods. While young researchers are excited to use qualitative methods in their work in this domain, we find that it can often be a struggle for them to locate tools and insights from experienced researchers to help them along in their research journey. The proposed virtual workshop attempts to fill this gap by forming a network of academic and experienced researchers in the qualitative research domain.

The workshop will have two parts. In the first part, experts will share their experiences of data collection and analysis and demonstrate the tools they have used in the course of their research. The tools likely to be discussed through the workshop sessions are: NVivo, AtlasTi, Dedoose, and R & Python based qualitative use cases.

In the second part of the workshop, experts will engage more deeply with selected research challenges that workshop participants will bring to the table based on their experiences while conducting qualitative research.

Participants

PhD students / Research scholars and young faculty colleagues who use or are likely to use qualitative methods in their research projects. We expect to have about 100 participants at the workshop overall and about 15 for the small group sessions. Participants for both will be picked based on the strength of their applications and fit with the workshop goals.

Application

Please email a one-page CV and your statement of purpose (SoP) (1000 words max) to the workshop coordinators. In your application / SoP, please highlight the topic of your research, the stage your research is at and why you think this workshop will support your work at this stage.

If you would like to participate in the second part of the workshop – expert discussion on participant’s research challenges and design -please submit a write up (2000 words max) indicating your area of research and the novel challenges in your qualitative research project you would like to discuss.

Workshop Fees

NIL.  There is no workshop fees. However, application is mandatory for participation.
